How did you get to Telluride? I came in 1998. I was on the road with my dog Lulu. We needed dog food and went to the Telluride Pet Supply, which was located next to the original Honga’s. I noticed a small for sale sign, within 24 hours I was buying a business and moving to Telluride.
What’s your astrological sign? Gemini sun = playful. Sag moon = gypsy heart. Virgo rising = I like order to things.
What brings you the most joy? A yoga class that brings me to the edge and back.
Who or what influences your teaching style? I'm very much influenced by nature and the students that come to class.
How do you apply practice to your life? For me it’s all practice. Literally. From raising kids, to my sobriety, to making sure my animals have fresh clean water every day. To the work I do on my mat. Practice takes me off the hook that it has to be perfect. Every day I start over and do it again.
About Jess: My roots are with the Jivamukti Yoga school. I’m honored to be part of their lineage. More recently I have been very much inspired by the theory of Katonah yoga. The teachings of yoga have been passed down to me in a very clear and pragmatic way. I’m always excited to share what I know. I’m a student first. I teach a class I would want to take. I try my best not to take any of it too seriously while not diluting the special magic of these ancient teachings. I feel deeply we need to have fun and it needs to feel good.
What to expect from a practice with Jess: Jess’s classes will change depending on the day of the week, the time of day, the season and the students who come. There is not one recipe she follows. She teaches a healthy mix of this and that. But what you will always have is clear instruction, movement guided by breath, specific alignment cues, good music and a few bad jokes.
